Open Studio at Randy Higbee Gallery

"Sunflower Arrangement, " oil on linen, 9"x12" - Available
This is one of two paintings I did during a fun one-day open studio event at Randy Higbee Gallery, Costa Mesa, CA.  Several times a year Randy welcomes artists to enjoy painting still life set ups or figure drawing/painting with a live model at his large gallery and frame shop.  It's a wonderful opportunity to meet and paint with other artists.  Randy charges a small fee to enjoy the studio and provides a delicious spread of cheeses, fruit, crackers, wine and more! www.randyhigbeegallery.com and www.kingofframe.com

My continued Rose challenge

"Pink Paris Blooms," oil on hardboard, 6"x6" - Available.

Since I am on a rose kick at the moment, I decided to look through some pictures I had taken at the Luxemburg Gardens in Paris.  I found quite a few good ones of  the "Catherine De Medici" roses.  They are beautiful and delicate.  They remind me of "Eden Climber" - which I just took pictures of while visiting a local garden shop.  So, more to come!  Along with a few Plein Air studies I have been doing of roses.

Roses

"Spring Blooms,"  oil sketch, 5"x7"  - (update sold)

Aaah roses, one of the biggest challenges for me as an oil painter.  When spring arrives and roses start blooming I am reminded to keep working through the my hesitation to paint them.  I used to paint roses often as a watercolor artist.  I didn't seem to have the difficulty I feel trying to paint roses in oil.  I'll keep painting the beautiful colorful varieties I see this spring and summer.  At least they are a lovely subject to look at while you paint them!

I recently located photographs of some watercolors I had done many years ago.  I thought it would be fun to show you this rose painting. "White Blooms," watercolor, 18"x24" painted on Arches cold press paper.

Hanging Upcoming Show

This past weekend I helped Laura Segil, owner of Segil Fine Art Gallery, and her assistant, artist Lynne Fearman hang 36 paintings for my solo show.  All went smoothly!  The show is up and we are all ready for the Artist Reception, this coming Saturday, March 2, 5:00-7:00pm.  I will post pictures next week from opening night of "Traditional Touches." Dragon with Pears

"Dragon and Pears," oil on linen, 11"x14" - Sold

Here is a recently completed large painting. (I know...11x14 is really not that large, only for me I guess!)  It's a pleasure and a luxury when I am able to paint a more complex still life and feel that I have the time to be patient with it.  I started this painting in October, with only the thought of getting it finished for my upcoming solo show in March, at Segil Fine Art Gallery.  (I like to have several large paintings in the process, as I also paint smaller pieces.)  The only problem is, and it's a good one, a collector came to my home yesterday and bought "Dragon and Pears."  With this painting now gone, I am feeling the pressure and anxiety to complete and add "larger" paintings for the show.  The clock is ticking...back to painting!

Silver and Mandarins

"Silver Creamer with Mandarins" oil on hardboard, 6"x12" (update - sold)

Working with the warm palette I enjoy.  I like the country elegance of combining silver with fruit.  Painting with broad loose strokes and thin paint in both the foreground and background, adds more of a rustic informal feel.
